We love our staggered stance pivot drill to reveal We love our staggered stance pivot drill to reveal the quality of an athlete’s hip to trunk relationship, and their understanding of flow/pace. At first, this set up is very revealing and uncomfortable to some athletes. If an athlete has poor hip to trunk relationship in a full pitch, this set up will force them to deal with an unfamiliar pelvic position. Allow them to work through the awkwardness in order to strategize and adapt to this set up, which imitates proper pelvic positioning and proper hip to trunk relationship in pitching. ⚡️Make sure to share and tag us, letting us know how you use this in your next practice!⚡️ **If you don’t understand the importance of this drill and how it relates to a full pitch, reach out and let us know. Many times as pitching instructors I feel as if we Many times as pitching instructors I feel as if we treat “using our legs” like salting our meal… We put so much emphasis on the arm, the arm circle, wrist snap, and throwing strikes at an early age just to get the job done. To the growing, forming athlete we make that action the meat and potatoes, the main meal, the entire intent of the pitch… And then we add the legs. As if it’s an after thought, just additional seasoning. Of course we release the ball out of our hand, so good arm action is important. But training your entire body to pitch the softball should be the meat and potatoes, it should be the main meal that’s emphasized from day 1 of a pitching career. Not the seasoning added to the end. Intent at a young age is important because it sets the tone for the rest of their career and how the athletes perceives the skill. Yes putting this much emphasis on the arm and wrist snap might get them then to “just throw strikes” but often this means that for the rest of their career they will have a built in governor that only allows them to get a little better than “just throwing strikes.” When training the entire body, athletes might not always get it right, it might take a little while to marinate and simmer. But in the end you will have a much more robust athlete with more opportunities and options for performance success. @highlevelpitching

I come from a family of builder/contractors and married into a family of carpenters. This is a subject I’ve heard a lot of griping and complaints about over the years and understand the correlation well 😂 🔴If the foundation is off the rest of the build will be very difficult or even impossible without massive adjustments to the plans. 🔴If the frame of the house is built out of square then the drywall will be a bear to set, mud and finish. A good dry wall finisher can coverup some framing issues but not without effort, and these mistakes WILL begin to reveal themselves over time! 🔴When you have to go back and fix mistakes after the house has already been completed it’s expensive, time consuming, messy and inconvenient. Skill acquisition is the same way. 🔴If you are constantly looking for a quick fix or just trying to get the job done in order to play this weekend, you might be ignoring your foundation and framing issues. 🔴Superficially the job (your performance) can look good and photograph well, but long term those issues will begin to reveal themselves in very costly and detrimental ways. 🟢This is why we train as much or more than we pitch. 🟢We care about the quality of your movements not just the look of your pitch. 🟢If you don’t understand the difference between the two let me know! @wassermanstrength and I have some great resources to begin to train and teach movement quality. @highlevelpitching
One of these things is not like the other! “Use One of these things is not like the other! “Use your hips” or “Squeeze your glutes” is not a magic phrase that fixes all issues, I should know I tried it for years. I realized that the muscle I was continuing to cue was actually masking deeper issues in my athletes. So we began a journey of learning, exploration and creation of fresh ways to feel pitching and expand our thinking. @janeanderson08 has been through it all with me and I could not be more proud of her willingness to explore and discover right along with us! ⚡️⚡️⚡️ @highlevelpitching
Our Youngblood athletes get exposed to a variety o Our Youngblood athletes get exposed to a variety of training strategies early and often. For far too long many of my athletes used the excuse “Well I just don’t have good balance” for the reason they avoided certain drills or tasks or for their clumsiness. The older they become the more they avoid because they are embarrassed or it just gets harder. This avoidance creates a built in plateau because they are not willing or confident in themselves or their bodies enough to train their struggle points. Exposing your young developing athlete to challenging tasks and training strategies early is important for nervous system development, and confidence. Athletic abilities and nervous system coordination can be and should be trained early and often! It’s not always pretty or athletic looking, but it’s a process that’s necessary to go through. Don’t expect growing athletes to move perfectly or perform like more mature pitchers. Let them struggle a little, let them fail a little, let them learn how to laugh at themselves a little…. Let them be little! @highlevelpitching
How your athlete interprets a cue matters. Transf How your athlete interprets a cue matters. Transferring energy efficiently and effectively is important for endurance, longevity and the healthy of our athletes. One of the most important moments in this energy transfer chain is how we land and create resistance. Our athletes perform an outrageous volume of pitches on a weekly and yearly basis. If they are inefficiently transferring energy they will likely plateau or possibly even get injured. These are two very different versions of this same idea/cue! Pay close attention to how and why your athletes interpret information you give them it can help you seer them away from those unwanted speed bumps earlier rather than later. @highlevelpitching
Wrist snap is not what many think it is. Unlearn Wrist snap is not what many think it is. Unlearning the traditionally taught flexion extension of the wrist can be a very difficult thing for a lot of athletes. It creates a muscle/push dependence at ball release and it can be the very thing that holds us back from “using our legs” (as traditionally phrased.) What does wrist snap have to do with “using your legs”?!?! 🧐 Our young ladies start early learning supination and pronation so they can properly connect their top half and bottom half in sequence. Enjoy this version of upward toss in your next pitching session to begin the process of upgrading your “wrist snap.” @highlevelpitching
“Be where your feet are.” For the last month o “Be where your feet are.” For the last month or so this theme has been on my heart for many reasons. We’ve taken a little hiatus from Social Media to process and just be present. Taking inventory of what’s most important. As competitive people and business owners I think we can get overly excited about what’s next and always trying to achieve something greater. I’m the first to advocate for and talk about growth mindset, it’s so important as an athlete and as a society. I think, however, we can get caught up. We forget to be fully present. We forget to enjoy the moment. And we forget to be thankful for the gifts and blessings that God has given us in our current situation. I have to practice what I preach to my athletes. I constantly tell them that rest is essential, keep your head down, learn to become wise, and don’t compare yourself to others. Outward growth and physical gain is not a process that continues indefinitely!! Often we MUST stop, rest and learn to grow deep roots that are unseen. Don’t get so caught up in those social media bragging rights that you forget to stop and grow deep seeded roots. Be fully present in what you are doing, why you are doing it, and who you as a person. The game will honor the rest.
